Baby Clothes & Blankets
by Jan Grove
I have saved all my grandaughter's receiving blankets and infant clothes in the hopes of making a quilt for her.
I have a lot of sewing knowledge, but I have never made a quilt. I look at the pile of baby blankets and clothes on on my bed and have no clue how to start! Thank you.
ANSWERStart by separating your baby clothes and blankets by fabric type. For example, put all your 100% cotton fabrics in one pile, and all your stretchy fabrics in another. It's a lot easier to sew a quilt (especially for beginners) if you use the same fiber content throughout your quilt.
You can eliminate the sashing strips if you desire. In that case, just sew the blocks into rows. Then follow the remaining instructions to complete your quilt.
For stretchy fabrics, apply a lightweight, non-woven fusible interfacing to the back of the blocks. This prevents the fabric from stretching out of shape as you sew it. It seems contradictory, but don't use an interface that's made for knits. It's too stretchy, and it will defeat your purpose.
It sounds like you have many beautiful baby clothes and blankets. Your quilt is sure to become a family heirloom. Happy quilting!
