Backing and Border in One?

by Margaret Taylor
(Freeling SA Australia)

Hi Gloria. I have followed your instructions and am now up to putting the 3 layers together. I have enough fabric to make the backing in one piece and still would have enough to incorporate a border in that one piece. Is there a technique for doing this?

I think it might involve turning the quilt inside out after hemming 3 sides, but I have no idea how to get to that stage. How do you get the corners square?

It might be too difficult for me at this stage (if it can be done). So, I will probably border it then fill and back it. But for future reference and for smaller items, I would like to know if it is possible, and if so, how to do it. Thanks for all your help so far.

ANSWER

I've never heard of sewing borders this way. But, curiosity got the best of me, and I tried to do it on some scrap fabric. I wasn't successful. My advice? Just cut individual border strips. They're super easy to sew, and you'll finish your quilt a lot faster.

When you sew with border strips, you can add binding. Whereas, if you turn your quilt inside out, you can't add binding. Just keep this in mind when you're planning your quilts.

There is a technique where you can sew your binding and backing from the same piece of fabric. But that's another story. For now, just focus on getting those borders sewn on.

I'm proud of you for trying to find a shortcut. That's the sign of a creative quilter! By the way, when you finish your quilt, please consider submitting it to our Quilt Gallery. Thanks for your question about sewing borders.
