Amount of Backing Required for My Quilt Top
by: Anonymous

I have fabric backing that measures 56 wide without the selvage. I have a finished quilt top which measures 30 inches wide by 31 inches in length. How much backing do I need from the above back fabric. thank you.

ANSWER

You didn't tell me the length of your fabric. But I'll assume you have enough to cover your quilt top. I would cut your fabric 36" wide x 37" Long. You'll notice I added 6" to your quilt top measurements. This gives you an extra 3" on each side of your quilt top.

During the quilting process, fabric gets taken up. So, if you cut your quilt top exactly to size, you wouldn't have enough fabric to cover your quilt top. Once you're done with quilting, you'll trim off the excess.
