Basic Sewing

by Bruce
(Frederick, MD)

So basically you piece together your top piece, then sew it onto top batting which is on top of bottom sheet by sewing in the ditch along all the seams of the top sheet?

So then if you have a very intricate design with zillions of patches, how do you get it laid out on top so that it lays out nicely before sewing?

Plus what tip can you give to sew many irregular pieces together? I see many quilts where designs are redundant geometric shapes. I'm considering a more free form abstract quilt with a lot of pieces, not excluding an underlying pattern shape.

ANSWER

No matter how many pieces you have in your quilt, you follow the same procedure: Press the quilt top; Layer it on top of the batting and backing; Smooth out wrinkles with your hands, starting at the center of your quilt toward the outer edges; Baste quilt layers together; then quilt.

As far as sewing many irregular pieces together, I'd have to see the pattern. I don't know what your design looks like, or what method you're going to use to sew it together. Here's the best advice I can offer: No matter how you design your quilt, always maintain accurate seam allowances.

Also, you might want to draw your design on graph paper first. In this way, you can work out your design and figure out how large or small you must cut your fabric pieces. Then, sew a few pieces of fabric together to get an idea of how your design and fabrics are going to work.

Here's a few good books about designing your own quilts. They have a lot of great ideas for making unique designs.
