Crosswise Strips

Hello, my name is Melody and my sister purchased a kit for me as a gift. However one of the instructions in the kit was to cut crosswise strips.

I have not heard this term before. Would you be kind enough to tell me what it means? I have been trying to do new things, but I have not come across this before. Thank you for your valuable time.
