Cutting Fabric Wrong

by Pam
(Minnesota)

A friend of mine said she would teach me how to make a quilt so she showed me the "basics" and gave me a mystery quilt to cut out and make. I have cut all the pieces right except one where I read the directions wrong.

I needed four 2 1/2 strips on one color and the rest of the fabric is 1 1/2 strips. I cut them all 1 1/2 strips. Can I sew some together to make the 2 1/2 strips? Will it look ok? Thanks.

ANSWER

Allowing for seam allowances, cut (four) 1 1/2" strips. Sew one strip to each of the 1 1/2" strips you already have. This will give you
(four) 2 1/2" strips. Whether it looks good or not is totally up to you.

Is there a possibility that you could buy a little more fabric? For long strips, you could use 1/8 yard. For shorter strips, you could get away with using a fat quarter (18" x 22").
