Cutting Squares and Triangles
If you are using 5" squares on point, how big should the squares be if you are cutting them into triangles to fit with the 5" squares?
ANSWERTriangles along the sides of your quilt are called "setting triangles." Triangles on the four corners of your quilt are called "corner triangles."

To quickly calculate the proper size of your triangles, use the triangle chart below. Or, if you're into math and want to see
how to calculate sizes, check out these instructions.

Formula for Cutting Setting Triangles- Multiply finished size of block by 1.414
5" x 1.414 = 7.07
- Add 1 1/4" to that number
7.07 + 1.25 = 8.32
- Next, round 8.32 to the nearest 1/8".
Let's look at the .32 in our 8.32 number. Referring to our chart, the next highest decimal after .32 is .375. So we'll round up our measurement to 8 3/8".

Formula for Cutting Corner Triangles- Divide finished block size by 1.414.
5" ÷ 1.414 = 3.53
- Add .875 or 7/8" for seam allowances.
3.53 + .875 = 4.40
- Next, round 4.40 to the nearest 1/8".
Let's look at the .40 in our 4.40 number. Referring to our chart above, the next highest decimal after .40 is .5. So we'll round up our measurement to 4 1/2".
