Cutting

by Jenny
(Santa Ana, Ca, USA)

Hi Gloria. I love your website, I think it will help me a lot with my new adventure in quilting. I have sewn before but I feel so dumb about cutting quilting fabric.

For example when you say 2 1/2 x 3 1/2, I always think like the math term length x width. Is this correct? Is the length the first value or is it opposite? I hope this makes sense, I am really having trouble with this. Thank You!

ANSWER

Hi, Jenny. First of all, there's no dumb questions in quilting. It's actually pretty smart to ask questions, because then you'll get an answer (smile).

In your example, 2 1/2" is the width and 3 1/2" is the length. I always write the smaller fraction first, just to keep things consistent. Thank you for your cutting question.
