Difference Between Patchwork and Quilting?

I'm confused. What's the difference between patchwork and quilting? I thought they were the same thing. But, I've been told they're not. Can you clarify this for me? Thank you!

ANSWER

You're right. These two words means different things. It's easy to confuse the two, because they're used so interchangeably.

Patchwork is the act of sewing "patches" or pieces of fabric together to make a larger project, like a quilt.

Quilting is the act of sewing the quilt layers together. The word "quilting" is also used as a general reference to the hobby, for example, "quilting fabric" or "quilting friends."
