Dutchman's Puzzle

The
Dutchman's Puzzle block uses four
Flying Geese units. So, if you already made the Flying Geese block, you're ahead of the game. If not, don't worry. This block goes together quickly and easily.
What You Need
 |
Step 1
Cut Eight
3 ½" x 3 ½" squares from each light strip.

Step 2
Draw a diagonal line on the
wrong side of each square.
Step 3
Arrange One dark rectangle and Two light squares like this:

Step 4
Place a light square on left corner of rectangle. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch on drawn line.

Step 5
Trim seams to ¼".

Step 6
Press seam toward dark fabric.
Step 7
Place a light square on right side of rectangle. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch on drawn line.
Step 8
Trim seam to
¼".
Step 9
Press seam toward dark fabric. You now have
One Dutchman's Puzzle unit.
Step 10
Repeat
Steps 1-9 for remaining dark and medium rectangles.
You should have
Four dark units and
Four medium units.
Step 11
Arrange
One dark and
One medium unit like this:

Flip Row A onto Row B. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch using a scant ¼" seam allowance.

Step 13
Press seam up.

Step 14
Repeat
Steps 12-13 to make the last three units. You now have
Four units total.
Step 15
Arrange the
Four units like this:
Step 16

Flip B onto A, right sides together. Stitch. Press seam toward A.

Step 17
Flip D onto C, right sides together. Stitch. Press seam toward D.

Step 18
Your two rows should look like this:

Step 19
Flip Row 1 onto Row 2. Right sides together. Match center seams. Pin into place. Stitch.

Step 20
Press seam up.

The Dutchman's Puzzle Block should measure 12 ½" x 12 ½" square.
