The best free quilt labels are the ones you make yourself. But, if you're short on time, try using a pre-made one.

Think about this. You discover an old quilt at a barn sale or antique shop. It's amazing in both design and workmanship. As you admire it, you wonder about the quiltmaker's identity and when and where she made it.

But, upon further inspection, you notice that the quilter didn't sign or date it. What a shame! Now, imagine that you discover a quilt from one of YOUR ancestors. It's not signed or dated, either. How much more disappointing is that?

You have no idea which family member made this wonderful family heirloom. Do you see the importance of quilt labels? Do your relatives a favor... sign and date your quilts! Future generations will have documentation of your treasured heirloom.

Another great reason for adding a label? It provides identification should your quilt become lost or stolen. With this in mind, make sure you attach your label securely. You can attach it to your quilt before you quilt it.

This is the best way to ensure that the label can't be removed. But, it's also acceptable to add the label after you finish quilting. In this case, apply the label with handstitches. This prevents your stitches from showing on the top side of your quilt.
