Invisible Thread Use

Can I use invisible thread on both the top and bottom of my quilt?

ANSWER

I wouldn't recommend using invisible thread (monofilament thread) on the back of your quilt. Winding it on a bobbin creates too much tension on the bobbin, and it's hard to wind it smoothly and evenly. Sometimes the tension is so great that the nylon thread breaks in the middle of a seam. That's a real hassle.

Secondly, this thread is tricky. It takes some skill to sew with invisible thread. Many people have thrown up their hands in frustration when they used it for the top thread. Can you imagine how much worse it could get on the backside of your quilt (where you can't see what's going on?)

I recommend using invisible thread on your quilt top only. For the backside, use a thread color that matches or compliments your backing fabric.

Finally, I always like to warn quilters about using invisible thread on baby and juvenile quilts. Please don't do it. The nylon thread melts when exposed to heat. And, (cheap) invisible thread can eventually dry out and break into little pieces.
