Ironing a Quilt

Before sewing the binding around my mini wall quilt, I ironed out the creases in the fabric. I noticed that it flattened some of the batting so most of it lost the "puffy look" to it. Is there anything I can do to get back the puffiness to the batting?

ANSWER

Ironing a quilt can be tricky, especially if you're using a polyester or cotton/polyester blend. You see, polyester melts when it comes in contact with high heat. If your iron was too hot when you pressed the binding, you might not be able to regain the puffiness.

Try washing your quilt on a gentle cycle. You don't need detergent; water will do. You could even wash it by hand. Place your quilt in the dryer on a low-heat setting. Hopefully this restores the puffiness.

For future reference, always use a low heat setting when ironing a quilt.
