You don't need to baste a quilt if you use a quilt frame consisting of four boards clamped at corners. That is the way I do all my quilts. You have to have the room though to put up a frame like that unless you are just doing a small quilt. I have one room in my basement just for putting up quilts and it holds a large king size quilt frame.

Basting by: Marilyn
I was wondering if basting spary is a good option? I machine quilt all my quilts. Plus I am a beginner and I don't want the puckers and bunching up. Can someone help me on this? I don't have the means to purchase a good frame.

Thank you! by: Bonnie
I found your instructions quilt useful and can't wait to try my next quilt using your method. I was doing something similar, but i was still getting bunching. I am going to try the curved basting pins and/or the basting gun. Thanks!

Don't need to baste when hand quliting by: Julia
In describing how to baste a quilt, at the end you stated that you didn't need to baste if hand quilted and directed to a web site for a quilt frame. Why isn't basting necessary? And if it's not necessary then, what's the technique to keep the back smooth and straight? ANSWER
I have corrected the statement to which you are referring, since it wasn't clear. In most cases, you should baste first. However, there are times when basting isn't necessary. For example, you don't have to baste your quilt when you use a no-baste quilting frame.
Perhaps you feel more comfortable using basting stitches. That's fine, too. It's just nice to know that these wonderful no-baste quilting frames are available.
