10 Steps to Better Machine Quilting
- Adjust your machine, table and chair to the proper heights. You don't want achy joints or carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Have all your supplies close at hand.
- Make sure your machine is in good working order. Has it been oiled recently? Open the throat plate and remove lint, dust and fuzz.
- Pop in a fresh needle. You should change your needle after 4 to 6 hours of sewing.
- Use quality thread.
- Take a break at least every 30 minutes to keep your circulation going!
- Make sure you have enough light. You don't want to strain your eyes trying to see what you're stitching.
- Wear quilting gloves. They help you to grip the fabric as you quilt.
- Glance ahead of your stitches. It's tempting to focus on the needle as you stitch. But you'll sew straighter seams if you look ahead of your stitches. I know it sounds strange, but it really works!
- Practice, practice, practice.
These machine quilting tips are designed to give you the confidence you'll need to quilt your first project. By starting off on the right foot, you'll find yourself one step closer to mastering machine quilting.
