Measuring for Quilt Back

by Sue
(Port Orchard, WA)

I know how to measure for quilt backs using 42-inch wide fabric. How do I calculate fabric for a back when the backing fabric is 108 inches wide? Thank you for your time.

ANSWER

Sue, your quilt top measurements remain the same whether you're using 42" or 108" wide fabric. So, measure the length and width of your quilt. Then add 8-inches to both numbers. This gives you an extra 4-inches of fabric on each side of your backing fabric. You'll trim off the excess after you're done quilting.

Example:
  • Quilt measures 24" x 32"

  • Add 8-inches to both numbers:

    24" + 8" = 32"

    32" + 8" = 40"

  • Cut out a 32" x 40" piece of fabric from your 108" wide backing.
