Morning Star Quilt Sashing Strips

by Wendy
(Canada)

I have a block that is 6 1/2 ". I know that sash needs to be one third, making the block 8" not the divisible by 3. What do I do?

ANSWER

When figuring the width of sashing strips, use the finished size of the block. For example, your blocks will measure 6" once they're sewn into your quilt. That's the finished size.

So, let's take your 6" block and divide it by 3.

6 ÷ 3= 2

Now add 1/2" for seam allowances.

6 ÷ 3 = 2 + 1/2"

That means you'd cut your sashing strips 2 1/2" wide. Thanks for your question, and have fun sewing your Morning Star quilt!
