My 1st Quilt

by Glenn Dragone

Hello,

I just finished my first quilt and wanted to thank you for an awesome tutorial. I found it both informational and easy to follow.

I made it through with only a few bumps in the road. I had a hard time with the binding and might do it by hand (tacking down the back) the next time around.

I added some decorative stitching to replace the "stitch in the ditch" against the black. Of course, I didn't think to simply change the color of the thread to black to help hide the contrast. In any event, I do like the swirls that I came up with for the inside border.

Question: Since the swirls seem to stabilize these sections, can that replace the stitch in the ditch as I guessed?

Thank you again for saving me the time and $$ of taking a course at a quilt shop. I feel confident to begin another quilt.

Wonderful Bright Interesting quilt!!

Congratulations on your first quilt. Your quilt will be an inspiration to others. I truly loved your color choices, all the squares are so vibrant.

I was having problems attaching the binding as well, then someone told me to purchase a walking foot for my machine. Now I always use a walking foot when attaching the binding, this alleviates the frustration and the puckering that can happen with your material, then I hand stitch down the other side.

I would be interested in seeing your next quilt endeavour. Keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing.

Eye Popping!

ANSWER

Glenn, I'm quite impressed with your first quilt! I absolutely love your fabric selections. They give your quilt a whole new, refreshing look. Congratulations!

I also like the swirls around the sashing strips. These stitches will stabilize your blocks. However, if you plan to wash your quilt, you might want to add some quilting lines around the outer border strips. That's because the batting will bunch up in the wash if it's not attached to your quilting fabrics.

My husband was fascinated with your quilt. He said to tell you "Great job!" I don't know why, but men seem to have a knack for creating extra special quilts. We hope you will "wow" us again with another one of your awesome quilts. Thanks!
