Odor in Cotton Quilt
My quilt has an odor that I cannot distinguish. I washed it 3 or 4 times. I used baking soda and soap, but odor is still there. The quilt is okay in every way otherwise. The quilt was made in China? I'd like to know what this smell is.
I'm hoping it isn't chemicals. Should I continue using it? Right now it is on my bed. My husband hasn't said a word to me, or I to him. Thanks!

ANSWERSince your cotton quilt was made in China, anything is possible. You don't know where it rested along its way to the USA.
Your batting might have mildew, which is very difficult to remove, if not impossible. It could contain chemicals, or even parasites.
You could try removing the odor with white vinegar. Test the vinegar on a small section of your quilt to be sure it won't discolor it. If everything looks good, add a cup of white vinegar to a warm wash. Then air dry your quilt.
I know chlorine bleach is great for removing just about anything. Unfortunately, it would also remove the dyes from your fabric. So, unless you have a white cotton quilt, I'd avoid it.
You could ask your dry cleaner for their opinion. But, it's going to be a tough call since they don't know the quilt's history, and they can't see the batting. But it's worth a shot.
Personally, I wouldn't waste any more time or effort on it. This cotton quilt has big problems, and you may never get the odor out. I'd send it back to wherever you bought it. Quilts are supposed to give you comfort, not agony.
Next, go out and buy a new cotton quilt. Make sure it's not made in Asia. If you can find one that was made in America, you've struck gold!
Thanks for sharing your question about your cotton quilt.
