Paper Piecing

by Fenella
(Wales)

I am just about to start on my first project and can't wait to get going. But, I plan to sew by hand, not machine, and I'm confused about whether to use paper or not.

What are the advantages/disadvantages please? Is using paper an English thing? Sorry this is such a beginner question! I look forward to hearing from you.

ANSWER

Paper piecing is also known as English paper piecing or foundation piecing. It's a great way for beginners to learn to quilt.

When you paper piece, you sew small pieces of fabric to a paper pattern. Because you sew on the preprinted lines, you can achieve more accurate results than with traditional piecing.

Another plus: You don't have to worry about sewing accurate seam allowances, and you can sew small, intricate shapes with ease.

Paper piecing by hand is also convenient in that you can take your project anywhere. Heck, I'm a pro and I still paper piece some of my quilts!

So, I'd say go for it!
