Patchwork Block Quilt

by Rikki
(Oregon)

I'm making a patchwork block quilt. Each square is three layers: Top, bottom and batting. Every other square is made from nine smaller squares for the top, and all the squares have a large piece for the back.

I don't know how to fasten the squares together. It was a project someone else started and was given to me when she passed away. I have the picture of what it's supposed to look like, but no written instructions.

ANSWER

Your patchwork block quilt sounds like a "quilt-as-you-go" project. This method is also known as "block-by-block quilting" and "divide and conquer."

Traditionally, we sew the entire quilt top first. Then we attach all three layers with quilting stitches. But in your case, you'll have to sew and quilt each block individually. Once you've done that, you'll sew the blocks together.

The theory goes like this: It's a lot easier to quilt one block at a time than to quilt an entire patchwork block quilt. I agree to a point, but sewing the blocks together using this method is trickier.

Please research this techniques before you attempt to sew your patchwork block quilt. Find out if this method appeals to you or not, because it's not for everyone.

I've included a few links below to get you started. I wish you all the success and joy that comes from making a patchwork block quilt. Thank you for your question.
