Preventing Bleeding Fabric

by Joan Brown
(Herico,NC)

I have just finished a queen size rose album quilt that needs to be washed since I have handled it so much. My problem is that there is a burgundy fabric in it that may bleed since I did not prewash.

Do you have any suggestions for me or is there a product on the market that I can use? Thanks.

ANSWER

Do you have a scrap of the burgundy fabric? If so, try this test. Buy a product called synthrapol. Synthrapol prevents fabric dyes from migrating to other fabrics during the wash cycle.

Take the burgundy scrap and wash it with a white scrap of fabric. Even better, use fabric scraps from your quilt. See if the burgundy bleeds into the other fabrics. If not, you're set to go. Synthrapol is a great product. It works in most situations. Give it a try!
