Quilt Block Setting

Quilt Block Setting
Sashing Strips

A quilt block setting or "set" refers to how you arrange your blocks for the quilt top. There are many ways to do this. But, for simplicity's sake, I'm going to focus on the straight set.

In a straight setting, you place blocks next to one another in horizontal and vertical rows. It’s easy to stitch this setting because all the seams are straight.

Quilters often frame their blocks with strips of fabric called sashing or "lattice." The graphic to your left shows light blue sashing strips.

Sashing works especially well when your quilt blocks have busy designs. It separates each block so each design stands on its own.

This quilt block setting is perfect for beginners. If you're tempted to try a more advanced setting, please don't. There's a chance you'll become discouraged and lose all interest in quilting.

Start with a basic setting first. Then, move on to more challenging projects.
