Adding a Quilt Border

Quilt Border
Border

When it comes to quilt border designs, you have plenty of choices. You can create your own or choose from hundreds of existing patterns. For the sampler quilt, I've chosen a simple design. That's because it's quick and easy.

It's best to cut your strips on the Lengthwise Grain. The lengthwise grain is stronger than the crosswise grain. It has the least amount of stretch or "give."

We want our border strips to lie flat, with no wavy edges, and the lengthwise grain makes this possible.

What You Need
Cut strips on the Lengthwise Grain.

Seam allowance included in measurement of the cut fabric.

Step 1

Measure quilt from top to bottom at the center point. Write down that number. We measure this way because the center has the least amount of stretch. This gives us a more accurate measurement.

Measure Top to Bottom

Step 2

From your 3" pre-cut strips: Cut two strips that match the above length.

Example:

  • Quilt measures 26 ½" down the center.

  • Cut quilt border strips 3" x 26 ½".
Now, fold them in half lengthwise and finger press.

Step 3

Fold quilt top in half (from top to bottom). Finger press at center points. Match folds on strips to folds on quilt (shown in red).

Step 4

Pin strips to quilt top, right sides together. Stitch. Press seams toward border strips.

Step 6

From your 3" pre-cut strips: Cut two strips that match the above length.

Example:

  • Quilt measures 18 ½" across the center.

  • Cut quilt border strips 3" x 18 ½".
Now, fold them in half lengthwise and finger press.

Step 7

Fold quilt top in half (from left to right). Finger press at center points. Match folds on strips with folds on quilt (shown in red).

Step 8

Pin strips to quilt top, right sides together. Stitch. Press seams toward border strips.

Sew Strips to Quilt Top
You quilt top should measure approximately 23 ½" x 31 ½".

After you sew the quilt border, you're done with the top. Isn't that a great feeling? Give yourself a hand. Take a moment to appreciate all the work you've done. In fact, you deserve a long break. Come back when you're rested.
