Quilt Sashing

by Erin
(Olympia, WA)

Hi, Gloria! Thanks again for your wonderful site.
I wanted to ask you about quilt sashing guidelines for a large quilt. Should you cut the strips the size of a row of quilt blocks, or use small strips for a couple of blocks at a time and then sew those together until you have an entire row of blocks finished?

I am making 18" blocks (5x7 rows) with 2 1/2 or 3" sashing, for a graduation quilt for my daughter. Not sure what to do about the sashing for this large of a quilt. Thanks.

ANSWER

I recommend sewing your quilt sashing strips as follows: Sew the shorter strips to the blocks first. Then, measure the row across. Finally, cut your longer strip to that measurement. This is a more accurate way of sewing quilt sashing strips.
