Quilt Size

by Barb
(Oregon)

Years ago, a member of my husband's family gave me a number of hand-sewn, embroidered Sunbonnet Sue blocks. I put them away for about 30 years and found them a couple of weeks ago. I pulled out the best ones (some were pretty rough) and started my quilt.

Unfortunately, the size of my quilt came out to be 84" x 48". Can I add another couple of strips to the two edges to make it look less skinny? I have never seen this done, and I hate to take the quilt apart and lay it out differently. Thank you.

ANSWER

I haven't seen this done, either. But that's the beauty of quilt making. You design your quilt in a way that's most pleasing to you.

Yes, you could add a border strip to both sides of your quilt. This would definitely make your quilt look more proportional. If you added 8" to 10" borders, your quilt would fall into the twin size category.

Although you dislike the idea, you might also consider removing a row or two of blocks. In this way, you even-out an otherwise "out-of-proportion" quilt. I can't tell you how many rows to remove, because I don't know the size of your blocks. But I'll tell you this: The larger the blocks, the less rows you'll need to remove.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure it's going to turn out beautifully. By the way, we'd love to see a photo of your quilt. Send it our way so we can all enjoy it!
