Quilting Business

by Kassandra Ware

I'm a 46 year old single mom of a college student. I work full time, but need to earn extra money and enjoyed sewing when I was in high school. I would like to know if there is money to be made in quilting.

I would like to do something from home that I enjoy. I haven't made a quilt before, but want to get your thoughts. Thank you.

ANSWER

I can't think of a better way to make money than by doing what you love! Quilting is very addictive. It's fun, relaxing and therapeutic, too!

But, before you even think about starting a quilting business, you should make a few quilts first. That will give you an idea whether you want to invest a lot of time in quilting. You'll also need the experience, because if you sew quilts for other people, they're going to expect quality workmanship.

If you decide a quilting business is for you, then I have a few ideas.

1.  Make quilts and sell them at craft shows. You can also sell your quilts on Ebay, at home, or from your own online store. I know of a few online courses that will teach you how to run a quilting business. They are, "Quilt Up a Storm" and "Start a Machine Quilting Business."

2.  Do machine quilting on other people's quilts. Check out these books for some ideas.
