Quilting Supplies

by Sandra Wesley
(Gitsegukla, B.C.)

What do I need to start quilting? No one seems to know. We need to get the basics. We are starting a class in our community of Gitsegukla for ladies and men. Please help us. Thank you in advance.

ANSWER

You don't need many quilting supplies to start. Most quilt shops give you a list of supplies that you'll need for class. I would call the shop and ask if a list is available. I'd be very surprised if they didn't have one.

Just in case, here's a few suggestions. You can buy most of these supplies at your local sewing or quilt shop.
  1. Fabric kit (provided by the shop) or fabric yardage you had to buy for the class.

  2. Project Book (if required)

  3. Sewing Machine, if you're machine quilting.

  4. Acrylic Ruler (6" x 24")

  5. Rotary Cutting Mat (18" x 24")

  6. Rotary Cutter (Large or Small)

  7. Small Scissors for trimming

  8. Pins, for holding fabric together

  9. Thread, 100% Cotton, or a Cotton/Polyester Blend

  10. Fabric markers, or marking Pencils

  11. Iron. The quilt shops usually provide the iron and the ironing board.
