Quilting Whole Cloth Quilts

by Barbara DeBusk
(Galena, Kansas)

My question is when you hand stitch a whole cloth quilt how many stitches should you stitch per inch?

ANSWER

Quilting whole cloth quilts has become really popular. Beginner quilters often sew 5 to 6 stitches per inch. Intermediate quilters average around 10 stitches per inch. And, many advanced quilters strive for 12 to 16 stitches per inch.

But, this isn't as important as making your stitches the same length, keeping them evenly spaced, and making sure they appear the same on the front and back of your quilt.

You could sew 20 stitches per inch. But what good would that do if they looked sloppy? It's much better to sew fewer stitches that are uniform in appearance.

Quilting whole cloth quilts is a very personal and unique experience for every quilter. Just do the best work you can muster. The praises will follow.
