Quilting with Machine

when I am quilting all three layers together on a quilt, the fabric on the back always seems to somewhat gather. I have tried every setting on my machine and moved my tension, but nothing seems to make it lie flat. Any suggestions?

ANSWER

Are you using a walking foot, also known as an "even feed foot" on your machine? If not, I highly suggest you do. I wrote a special article on how the walking foot helps to eliminate puckers as you quilt.

Also, are you quilting from the center of your quilt toward the outside edges? The method smooths puckers out and away from your quilt.

Are you using the correct needle? A machine quilting needle (size 80/12) works well. It's got a tapered point for stitching through multiple layers of fabric. If you're working with a high-loft batting, try a size 90/14 instead.
