Reasonable Starting Size

by Sahar
(Northridge, CA)

Hi, Gloria. I know a lot about sewing, so I've got that down pat. However, I have always wanted to make a quilt. What would be a reasonable size to start? What type of pattern do you recommend for an advanced sewer?

ANSWER

Sahar, I encourage my students to start small. Too often, I've seen new quilters take on queen-size projects, only to become totally discouraged halfway through the quilt (if they even make it that far). They were over-anxious and unaware of the time commitment involved.

Unfortunately, many of them decide to give up on quilting and abandon the idea altogether. That's why I wholeheartedly recommend starting small.

Since you're an advanced sewer, you could easily sew beginner and intermediate quilt projects. However, I've seen beginners who can sew professional-looking appliqué projects on their first try. Some of us are naturally talented in this regard.

So, it really depends on your time, your ambition and what you believe you can handle. But, I would definitely start with a small project.

You might be interested in my home study course for beginners. It's called "Patchwork Quilting Made Easy!" The sampler quilt measures 24" x 32", so it's a very do-able project. You'll learn a new technique with each block you complete. Best of all, you'll learn how to sew an entire quilt, from start to finish.

I would also recommend visiting your local quilt shop and checking out their patterns. Usually, they display sample projects on the wall, so you can see what you're getting in to. They also offer classes, so you might want to check into them as well.
