Star Cornerstones

I would like to make the cornerstones on my quilt to be stars. Is there a formula for what size square to sew to the corner of a strip. I want to make the stars by sewing a diagonal square to sashing. ANSWER Since I didn't have a photo or graphic to work with, I had to visualize what you wanted. Here's what I came up with.
