Stitching in the Ditch

by Roxi
(LaCrosse)

Hi. I am having trouble stitching in the ditch. I am starting in the middle of my quilt, and it seems like I have way to much fabric. It is bunching up on me. What am I doing wrong? Please help? I am convinced that I just made it way too big. It is about 6 feet by 8 feet.

ANSWER

Stitching in the ditch requires an even tension. It sounds like your machine tension is too tight. Try loosening it.

I would also recommend using a walking foot. A walking foot works with your feed dogs to advance all three quilt layers through your machine at the same rate. This helps to prevent bunching. I won't quilt without one.

I always encourage new quilters to start with a small project. That's because there's so much to learn, and it can become quite overwhelming in large doses.

I've seen too many quilters tackle large projects on their first try (like a queen size quilt). Usually, they become discouraged and frustrated, and they give up on quilting all together.

I hope this advice helps you with your stitching in the ditch and future projects.
