Table Runner Backing

by Jane D
(Hudson WI)

I am a newbie. When making table runners, what is the easiest way to cut the backing so its big enough?

Do I lay the top on the material right sides together and cut larger than the finished top, then pin and sew? Several seemed to slide sideways or come up short.

ANSWER

To calculate measurements for a table runner backing, measure the length and width of your runner. Now, add 8" to those measurements, like this:

1. Table runner measures 36" x 18".

2. Add 8" to both numbers.

36" + 8" = "44"
18" + 8" = 26"

3. Cut your backing piece to measure 44" x 26"

The 8" means your backing will be 4" wider on each side. You'll need this extra fabric when you start quilting. That's because fabric get "taken up" when it's quilted. After you finish quilting, just trim the backing fabric even with the quilt top.
