What is a String Quilt?

by Sherlyn Myer
(Knoxsville, TN)

I heard the term "string quilt" the other day? I don't have a clue what a string quilt is. Could you please give me more information? I'm intrigued. Thank you!

ANSWER

A string quilt is made from fabric strips which you sew to a large piece of fabric. It's similar to foundation piecing, where you sew fabric to a paper pattern. But in string quilting, you sew fabric to fabric.

It's fun to make string quilts. Each one is unique because you don't use a pattern. Best of all, you don't have to match fabrics or worry about grain lines. This is a great way to use up extra fabric. Although, some quilters buy fabric just so they can make a string quilt!

There are many ways to make a string quilt. But basically, you place a fabric strip (right side down) onto a large piece of fabric. You sew a seam, then you flip the strip over, so the right side faces up. Place another strip on top of that strip, and before long, you've got your own string quilt! Easy, ha?
